The phoenix is a mythical fire bird prevalent in many of the world's cultures. According to legend, it lives 500 to 1000 years, after which it builds a nest of twigs, ignites itself, burns to ashes, and is reborn anew. The metamorphosis of Chow Thai Pacific Rim into Chow Asian Street Food wasn't quite so dramatic, as there were no flames involved, but still it has been reborn, metaphorically speaking, into a scaled-down, less pricey version of the old concept.

For a long time, not counting occasional Indian-restaurant forays, I felt the only Asian food in town of real interest was Thai — despite the fact that many Thai restaurants felt the need to hedge their bets with Chinese menu items for the faint of fork. The pantry needs staple items, such as canned goods, pasta and peanut butter. The nonprofit group also is seeking food for Easter - hams and the trimmings - for the 2,700 boxes and dinners the mission will distribute this year, up from a 1,500 last year. But with Easter less than three weeks away, Meyers doesn't even want to disclose where they'll distribute the food boxes for fear they won't have enough.

On Monday, March 22, the Women of Seven Lakes will sponsor their annual Taste of the Town event, with all proceeds to benefit the West End United Methodist Church Food Pantry. The event begins at 4 p.m. with a wine-tasting, provided by Sandhills Winery, followed by the main event from 5 to 7 p.m. at Seven Lakes Westside Park Community Center. Additional appetizers for the wine tasting are being provided by Goldie's Gourmet, Harris Teeter, Fresh Market and Lowes Food Store.
